Math: Beyond Pencils and Paper
April is Mathematics Education Month, School Library Media Month, and April 11-16 is ESTEME (Excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education) Week. While many of us might have learned math and science with paper and pencil exercises, a wealth of video, computer applications and online content is now available to help students visualize and understand these important, but sometimes difficult subjects. If you're looking for ideas, talk to your school's library media specialist or check out some of this month's articles.
Articles about Broadband Math & Science: Connecting Technology and Hands-On Learning to Engage Students
Serious Fun
Three ways technology and project-based learning can enhance math and science classrooms.
I am always in search of ways to engage students in novel activities that fully immerse them in learning. Sometimes, as I observe my students, I am amazed by the lack of need to redirect them toward work. They are having "serious fun."...
From Visual to Memorable
Using video on demand to spark math and science learning that lasts.
To solve a sequence like 3x7+(84/12)-16, students used to memorize the expression "Please excuse my dear Aunt Sally." In Sylmar, Calif., a group of sixth-graders recently learned it through a three-minute video clip featuring catchy music, animated equation-solvers, and chants of "PEMDAS, PEMDAS," in time with highlights that indicate the part of the problem being worked on...
Forensics Files
Tips for incorporating forensic-science lessons that can add life to your curriculum.
At La Habra High School, the science curriculum had become stale. Too many students were not taking advantage of academic opportunities -- especially in science -- and we needed to find a way to engage them...The answer came in the form of a new class -- forensic science...
Broadband Math and Science
Broadband Tools: Web sites that invigorate math and science lessons through video, audio, gizmos, and more.
Do your students tune you out when you try to explain force vectors or scale diagrams? Perhaps they would take notice if a professional athlete showed them how these concepts play out in sports. Is your textbook's description of the forces of nature difficult to envision? Maybe it would help if your students could see hurricane clouds swirling and waves building -- or if they could create their own virtual hurricane!...
Articles about The Cutting Edge of Science & Math
Forum: Science at a Crossroads
Dennis Bartels, Alan Friedman, Jackie Miller, Martin Orland, and Gerry Wheeler discuss the critical effort to define essential science knowledge for learning and assessing in the 21st century.
What should we teach? What should we test? How should we teach? What's a district to do? Participants weigh in on these questions and other issues during a roundtable discussion...
Math That Matters
Andee Rubin presents the case for replacing the algebra/calculus track with data literacy -- a critical skill for modern life.
Our society is seriously conflicted about data. But we use data every day -- to choose medications or health practices, to decide on a place to live, or to make judgments about education policy and practice. The newspapers and TV news are full of data, but how do you judge the reliability of what you read, see, or hear...

Education and Youth
The Time Warner Foundation supports technology-related projects in four major areas of priority: Equipping Kids for the 21st Century, Extending Internet Benefits to All, Engaging Communities in the Arts, and Empowering Citizens and Civic Participation. Rather than simply providing grant monies, the foundation prefers to enter into sustainable, strategic partnerships with organizations that have demonstrated a commitment to pioneering innovative ways of meeting these priorities. Proposals are reviewed throughout the year, and the foundation responds to requests within 8 to 12 weeks.
